In response to my last post about the Cleveland Indians, my thoughtful husband gave me a new hat when I got home from work tonight.
This is a replica of a Cleveland Buckeye’s cap, circa 1946.
The Buckeye’s were Cleveland’s Negro League baseball team, when black players were not accepted in either major or minor league baseball teams. They played at League Park and won the Negro League Series in 1945, two years before Jackie Robinson signed on with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
I am still without a team to cheer for, but I can get behind commemorating this team of Cleveland’s past that in spite of a shameful system, played on. Here’s to you Cleveland Buckeyes!
